Since I last wrote, you have had elections in the U.S., and the Republicans have resurged in force. I won't ask you to explain. But this is beginning to look like an interesting moment in history (and I don't just mean U.S. history).

Since about 1970, a pretty mean vision has been propagated and encouraged and allowed to take over the direction of the planet, a vision of human beings as machines of self-interest and of economic activity as a contest of all against all for material spoils (economy: properly the nomos of the oikos, the regulation of the household).

As a consequence a debased notion of what constitutes political life has come to prevail, and has in turn given rise to a pretty contemptuous view of what constitutes the practice of politics. Thus the same politicians who did nothing to counter the mean vision of social life get to feel the fury and contempt, the furious contempt, of voters who see them as little more than machines of self-interest themselves. The word "trust" has lost all purchase. If today a politician were to utter on a public platform the words, "I ask you to trust me", he would be laughed down, no matter how sincerely he meant it".

Recomendamos: SKOOB y las cartas entre Coetzee y Auster

Primero, una puede pasar horas en esta genialísima librería de libros usados: Skoob, en el barrio Bloomsbury en Londres. La recomiendo. Un escondido sótano te lleva a filas y filas de libros, con el olor del tiempo en ellos. Ayer vi una copia de Nicomachean Ethics en griego y con sútiles anotaciones de un profesor de Oxford en los márgenes, a pluma, hechos en 1955. Tiene una excelente selección, sobre todo de literatura, una fenomenal sección de libros de cartas y diarios (ahí pasé la mayor parte del tiempo) y una bellísima colección de tarjetas y portadas de libros: Used BOOKS and Secondhand BOOKS at SKOOB.

Además, recomendamos Here and now: letters 2008-2011 entre Paul Auster y J.M. Coetzee (Harvill Secker, 2013). La lectura de las cartas es un gusto, incluso los temas que pensé que no me gustarían, como el deporte, los disfruté en cada una de sus palabras. Desde temas como la política, la amistad, la crisis financiera, la ética y la estética en los deportes, la literatura, el amor y el cine, están en estos intercambios elegantes y genuinos. La intensidad de Coetzee se une con la escritura pausada y el abordaje sencillo y transparente de Auster en estos estos temas. Una gran lectura para el verano. Dicho está.
